Since 1985, GenesisJobs volunteers have helped thousands of men and women look for, find and keep good entry-level, non-professional jobs. GenesisJobs volunteers provide the guidance and support applicants need to explore and obtain employment opportunities that may seem out of reach.
Why Volunteers?
GenesisJobs "employs" volunteers as key staff. Our volunteers are successful community, business and professional people who know what it takes to keep a job.
Their reason for being here is for a sense of satisfaction-not money, nor profitability. They know they are responsible to and focused on the candidate that comes for help. The value to volunteers is the opportunity to grow and help others grow, the satisfaction of doing an important job well, and the fellowship of community.
Volunteer Roles
GenesisJobs offers a full range of volunteer positions to suit every interest, schedule and skill set:
Greeters
welcome applicants, sign them in for their appointments, make them feel comfortable, and introduce them to their job counselors.
Job Counselors
help applicants on a one-on-one basis with applications, interviewing techniques, presentation skills, overcoming barriers and job search strategies.
Reference Checkers
verify the applicant's past employment and speak to former employers to get job performance observations.
Interview Role Players
help applicants at any stage of their job search by assisting them with rehearsing and polishing presentation skills.
Resume Coaches
help applicants develop effective resumes that are tangible and professional job search tools.
Job Developers
follow leads, foster relationships and develop access to companies with entry-level hiring needs.
Interview Escorts
drive applicants to GenesisJobs scheduled interviews, coaching and encouraging them en route and debriefing on the way back.
Follow-up Counselors
offer continued support and encouragement to newly hired applicants throughout their first year of employment. This includes advise in trouble-shooting techniques, problem solving skills, coping and retention strategies.
Workshop Leaders
conduct workshops in a series (WorkNet) that teaches search strategies and enhances employability.
As volunteers will affirm, the joy of helping just one person look for, find and keep a job is immeasurable:
"GenesisJobs is a place of tenacity and experience, enthusiasm and creativity, confidence and excitement, sincerity and joy … a place where I can discover my willingness to give up my prejudices and stereotypes … a place where people are listened to, that imparts a sense of accomplishment and belonging … I wanted to volunteer somewhere in the city where I could make a difference. You really can't help someone more than helping him find a job."
