At GenesisJobs, job seekers will experience an organization that cares about its applicants, accords them a sense of dignity and teaches them to find good jobs, free of charge.
GenesisJobs reaches out to potential clients through personal recommendations, media, referrals from congregations or community agencies. When that candidate initially calls GenesisJobs the telephone receptionist will clearly explain the services offered and will make an appointment for them to attend the very next Monday morning Orientation.
New clients are met at the door by volunteer greeters, who welcome them cordially and offer them cups of coffee. The hour-long Orientation's objectives are two-fold: To provide new clients with the information they need to decide whether GenesisJobs is appropriate for them, and to begin training clients in the fundamentals of a successful job search.
If interested in participating with GenesisJobs, the applicants sign a Covenant that states that GenesisJobs will provide coaching, including assistance in interviewing, appearance and attitude; interviews for actual jobs that suit the applicant; follow-through with prospective employers; plus follow-up with new employees for a year to help them manage the opportunities and obstacles of keeping the job. They schedule their first appointment with a volunteer job-readiness counselor later the same week.
Before each day's job counseling sessions begin, the staff and guests from businesses, professions, colleges, churches, and the community gather in the Job Development Roundtable. These disciplined but informal sessions invariably lead to prospecting calls to businesses, interviews and, ultimately, hires.
The volunteer application/resume coach reviews each new applicant's application and, where necessary, works together with the applicant to make it presentable. The volunteer Job Counselor helps the applicant become focused and systematic in his or her job search. Together they review the previous week's results, and plan a specific approach for the coming week. Through the framework of these meetings, the job counselor gauges the applicant's punctuality, reliability, skills, aptitude, attitude, and prospects.
Once an applicant has attended three consecutive job counseling sessions punctually, and has satisfactorily conducted an independent job search, the Employment Coordinators begin to market the candidate to the GenesisJobs business network. This involves scheduling interviews in companies with appropriate openings, arranging role-play interviews, and sharing feedback from the employers. The volunteer Interview Escort provides transportation to the job interview, offering last minute support and coaching as well as reliable door-to-door transportation.
When the applicant finds a position, whether through the GenesisJobs network or independently, the volunteer follow-up counselors initiate and maintain weekly telephone contact for a full year with the new employee. Together they anticipate and work through the issues that might enhance or prevent job retention.
"GenesisJobs helped me believe in myself … When you have somebody say, "It's worth it," they make it worthwhile … It's like having an angel on my shoulder. I try hard so I have something good to tell him when he calls."
GenesisJobs assists clients in overcoming obstacles. Through one-on-one coaching, our volunteers work to ensure that GenesisJobs candidates are the best they can be and enjoy many successes.
